I don't know know how it is where you live and work; but winter 2011 has been about as rough as any I've seen lately in North Carolina. We've had a couple of pretty big snow storms. Roads, parking lots and driveways are especially slick right now.
My wife INSISTED on going to work this morning -- probably because she could not tolerate me for another day. She just called and told me that roads are passable (excepting some patches of black ice). She tacked on information about sidewalks and parking lots, saying that they were trecherous sheets of ice. She DARED me to leave my office today because of risk of falling.
That being the case, I'm especially glad that I have tools that allow me to continue to be effective and to work with clients who have problems with their computers. Let me tell you what I recommend.
Remote Desktop. If you're ever away from your office and need access to your home or office desktop -- not an issue. Two products come to mind -- and every laptop needs one of these installed. GoToMyPC.COM is the perfect place to go to see Citrix's offering to allow you to remotely control your desktop computer(s). It's not free; but it's a lot less expensive than productivity losses as a result of weather related issues. Another product of this type is from LogMeIn.com. While their full-function product is about the same price as GoToMyPC, they actually have a free, limited function, version that may be good enough for casual (and occasional) users.
Remote Assistance. Rarely does a day go by without a telephone call from a user who thinks he or she is "in trouble" -- their computer isn't working or something similar. Citrix has MY answer to this -- it's GoToAssist -- a program that allows me to remotely run a user's computer. It's also a great training tool for me, because I can walk a client through an issue or demonstrate how do solve a client's problem.
Call me at 336-293-7757 if you have questions about this group of programs or need information on any of your immediate IT issues.
